Five for Friday

The Smithereens - 11Daniel Ross at Alien Soil has been doing Five for Friday for some time and I always enjoy it. He borrowed the idea from someone else and I’m borrowing it from him.
The deal is this. He fires up his iPod, sets it on random and hits play. First five songs get posted to his blog. I don’t have an iPod, so Windows Media Player will have to do.

  1. Smithereens – William Wilson from 11 (1989)
I love this CD, prettty much everything. I heard them while a freshman in college on somebody’s boom box and I was sold. I borrowed the CD and played it endlessly in my discman for a day and bought the CD later. This isn’t my favorite song from the disc, but I like it. I always felt like there’s some hidden meaning going on but never figured out what it was.
  2. U2 – Until the End of the World from Achtung Baby (1991)
Not a song I’m familiar with, but not bad. I’ve got the CD so it’s on my computer.
  3. First Call – Snap to It from Undiviided (1986)
First Call is a jazz vocal group very similar to Manhattan Transfer. My sister turned me on to them years ago. This one is a snappy (get it? Heh.) a Capella number. Fun song. If you like vocal harmonies, you’ll like this. This reminds me a bit of Take 6.
  4. Paul Simon – Under African Skies from Graceland (1986)
Great CD, I’ve had this one since High School maybe.
  5. First Call – True Love from God is Good (1989)
Wow, all 5 from my college years and two from First Call. This is not a Capella and is not nearly as good. A pretty mediocre pop-ish religious song frankly. This reminds me of a cross between early Amy Grant and Michael Bolton. Yeah.

Four Wheel Drive Corvette

4WD Corvette
I need to reclaim my blog’s manliness after over two weeks of purses (cool, automotive purses, but still – purses) at the top of the page. This ridiculous four wheel drive Corvette ought to do it.
Nothin’ brings a Tim Allen ‘Argh, argh, argh’ like a couple acres of polished diamond plate and monster mud tires on a Corvette.
I saw this thing pulling out of a neighborhood near my house and I immediately turned around and gave chase to capture a picture.
So what we have here is a late70s / early 80s Corvette mated to what, a Peterbuilt? Likely a GM truck chassis, actually. The 4WD Corvette of this era has been done before, but not to this level of, ahem, polish. I mean, wow, look at all that polished diamond plate!
Judging by the finished undercarriage and the massive cow catcher inspired front air dam (more polished diamond plate, naturally), this was not made to go mudding. I’m not sure why it was made, but I find it both ridiculously absurd and fully awesome.
I wish I had gotten a picture of that nose, it was a sight to behold. I tried, but the camera phone malfunctioned.
I’m hoping this guy lives in that neighborhood and isn’t just in town for the annual Good Guys hot rod show and was just turning around. If it’s local and lives nearby, I’ll likely see it again adn might get some better shots.

Awesome 80’s Flashback

I was into Styx big time in HS and college, collecting all their albums and following the band member’s solo careers. Mr. Roboto was the song that started it for me, believe it or not.
I’ve got a couple of Dennis DeYoung’s and Tommy Shaw’s solo albums as well as a three Damn Yankees albums with Tommy Shaw. I even have James ‘JY’ Young’s first solo album with Jan Hammer of Miami Vice fame (not good, at all). Tommy Shaw was the only one to have any real musical success outside of Styx with the Damn Yankees, who were awesome. I always thought that although Dennis was seen as the leader of Styx, it was Tommy who made the band a big success in the 70’s.
The Kilroy was Here tour was pretty cool, at least I thought so (I only saw it on VHS tape after teh fact). It opened with a movie made by the band that told the story of how Rock and Roll was banned and ‘Kilroy’ was a rocker who was imprisoned because he wouldn’t stop. He overpowers a Mr. Roboto (Japanese servant robot thing) and uses it as a disguise to escape. He then organizes a protest/concert in the old Paradise Theater. That was the end of the film and the start of the concert. At the end of the show, the ‘authorities’ break in and drag the band off stage.
Dennis DeYoung (lead singer) was always interested in the Rock Opera concept and this was his baby. Yeah it was cheesy, but it was 1983, everything was cheesy.
I later saw them on the Edge of the Century tour int he late 90’s and they put on a great show.
Thanks to Jared at the Thinklings for the video.

Road Runner Van

Road Runner Van
Unfortunately, it’s a photoshop, because a van made from 1971 Plymouth Road Runner would be all kinds of awesome. I love the vertical fender flares / bulges.
As seen at Hemmings but they got it from Car Domain who found it at the VW Vortex (scroll down) but it’s made by a member of the Road Runner Nest who goes by the name Capsule. Oh, and he’s done some more.
I love this comment from siscos83camaro on the Car Domain post: “Run run as fast as you can you cant catch me I’m in a Road Runner van.”

All About Cars

Kansas Bob tagged me with this on Facebook. Normally don’t go for most of these memes, but this one I couldn’t resist. Thought I’d do it here instead, but I might post it there too.
Want to play along? Answer for yourself on your blog or Facebook or here in the comments.

  1. What is your first “vehicular” memory?
  2. That’s hard to pinpoint. I guess it would be riding in Dad’s 1965 Barracuda in a Styrofoam car seat. Mom and Dad were ahead of their time, I had a car seat as a toddler in the early 70’s, but it was just a kiddie chair that they ran the seat belt through.

  3. What was the first “amazing” vehicle you ever saw?
  4. The first car I remember being awed by was an early 70’s Camaro. It had to be a ’70-’73 because I remember being awestruck by the 4 round tail lights as they went by going the other way on the interstate. I still love Camaros to this day and a ’72 Z-28 RS is high on my favorites list.

  5. What car did you learn to drive in?
  6. 1977 Cutlass Supreme, Mandarin Orange with a Light Buckskin landau top, side moldings and pin striping. 350 Olds (not Chevy) V8 with a 4 bbl.

  7. In what vehicle did you have your first date?
  8. Probably that same ’77 Olds, maybe Dad’s ’80 Citation 4 door hatch.

  9. What vehicle do you most remember riding or driving to school?
  10. Well, I drove the Olds many times, then I drove my ’76 Camaro (more on it later), but one of the most memorable was riding with a friend for early driver’s ed classes (he took early bird Chemistry) in his ’68-ish Chevy Nova with 3 on the tree. It barely ran, looked like it had been attacked with a ball bat and was various shades of blue plus black primer. We called it the bruiser.

  11. What was the first vehicle that was yours alone and where is it now?
  12. I always considered the ’76 Camaro mine, but I think I technically shared it with my sister. I found it in a junk yard a few years later looking for parts for my next car, a ’80 Chevy Monza.

  13. Have you ever totalled/wrecked a car? Describe.
  14. I had an ’80 Chevy Monza 4 speed hatchback (at right, it started brown and ended up blue. Click the picture for a larger shot.) that had 9 altercations with other vehicles, only 2 of which were my fault. Probably 3 of them should have been considered totaled, but I didn’t have the money so I took the insurance money (except the time I was responsible), went junkyard shopping and put the car back together. It had no less than 3 complete replacement front ends while I owned it.

  15. Your worst vehicle?
  16. Wow, this one is really hard. I’ve owned some deuseys.

    • That ’76 Camaro, lime green metallic with 11 rust holes. Three replacement panels, a full gallon of bondo and a Maaco paint job later it was sort of OK. Saved it from the wrecking yard for a coupleof years anyway.
    • The ’80 Monza had door hinge pins that would fall out while you drove. I’d then have to ask my date to get out first so I could climb out the passenger side. Oh, and when my girlfriend was in the car, the heat wouldn’t work. Before picking her up and after dropping her off it was fine (and she still married me!) The clutch cable froze and tore a hole through the firewall and then there was it’s habit of catching on fire, which it did twice. Had to be push started in the end so I always parked at the top of a hill. Sold it to some guy who bought it for his wife, poor woman.
    • The ’88 Nissan Pulsar that followed was good looking and fun, but was a real money pit. Spent $5,000 in 3 years just keeping it running. Alternator, couple of timing sensors, a nw ignition coil, three sets of tires, two exhaust systems and it needed both, plus a steering rack, speedo gear and shocks, when I traded it.
    • Then there’s the ’88 Grand Caravan SE that Dad gave me that ate a transmission and engine (and AC compressor, radiator, nearly lost a window on the street and the steering column almost fell apart), my current ’99 Honda Odyssey which is on tranny #3 (but has otherwise been great, and Honda paid for both transmission replacements), my current Mazda3 has had some issues and an ’88 Celebrity – ’nuff said.
  17. What’s your current vehicle, and what’s the most favorite vehicle you’ve had?
  18. Same car, my ’05 Mazda3 5 door. Love the way it looks, love the way it drives and still do at 51,000 miles. I also currently have the aforementioned ’99 Honda Odyssey EX (180,000 miles) and my toy, a 1960 Thunderbird Convertible.

  19. What is your dream car?
  20. Although a Corvette ZR1 is a very close second, I’ll say the Audi R8 V10 for it’s exotic good looks, supercar performance and Audi design, fit and finish:

Twitch Update

funny pictures

An update on Popsicle, as they called Twitch at the Vet ER. After he had been home for a few days, it was clear that although he was back to his normal self, there was something not right about the tip of his tail. It was constantly seeping, which was obviously not normal and more than a little gross. A trip to the vet revealed that it was frost bitten and would likely have to be trimmed. They tried antibiotics and a twice daily soak in, uh, something, but that didn’t help and last Thursday he got about 3″ of his tail snipped off. There he is above, post surgery.
The image of him in that cone just screamed LOLCat, so there you go. Got a better LOL? Go give it a shot.
He has to wear the cone for two weeks, which is both funny and sad. He’s already gotten it off once and he keeps getting his feet caught in the ribbon/string that holds it on, so I’m not sure we’ll make it the full two weeks or not.
Oh, and I’ve also learned that Twitch is not alone in his refrigerated exploits:
