Smashing Pumpkins

Yeah, there’s a band (or was) with that name, but I’m talking about the real thing.
Friday morning after trick or treating in our neighborhood Thursday night I awoke to find pumpkin shrapnel in my driveway. Seems some teenager had used out concrete as the weapon of choice against someone’s jack-o-lantern.
The mess I cleaned up was nothing compared to what the staff at Universal Studios had to clean up after Friday’s Conan O’Brian show.

Conan had the worlds biggest pumpkin guy on the show and they topped it off by bringing in the monster truck Grave Digger, ostensibly to crush it to get the seeds out. (Evidently, world record pumpkin seeds can bring $500 a piece. Who knew?)
The jump was perfect and the driver and Grave Digger creator, Dennis Anderson, was clearly having a lot of fun as he tramples the remains two more times.
An interesting side note is one of my High School classmates, Charlie Paukin, is also a driver for the Grave Digger team. I remember the modified high roller bike they talk about in his bio. He’s been driving monter trucks for a long time, I can remember the Excalibur truck that he started on being parked behind a house on Harrison Street in my home town back in the mid 80’s. Excalibur, I believe, was the first truck to beat the Ford Big Foot trucks back when they were the biggest name in the business.

Five for Friday

WCBE LogoAn “Occassional Series” here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.

  1. Candye Kane – Ramblin’ Blues from Fly on the Wall – Lost Tracks From Studio A, Vol. 8
Nice mellow blues / jazz tune recorded live here in Columbus.
  2. Tammy Wynette – Stand By Your Man from Sleepless in Seattle Soundtrack
Classic, old school country (the best kind).
  3. Styx – Paradise from Return to Paradise
Then obligatory new song on a ‘Best Of’ or in this case a Live compilation. True to form, it’s a mediocre song that doesn’t do the band’s history justice. Feels like it was plucked out of the mid-80’s even though the album is from 1997.
  4. Michael W. Smith – [Untitled Hidden track] from The Big Picture
Short (42 seconds) piano and bass jazzy tune, like something you’d hear from the band on Michael Feldmen’s Whad’ya Know?
  5. Heart – Alone from These Dreams: Heart’s Greatest Hits [1997]
Classic female rock originally from 1987.

Your turn, fire up your MP3 player, put it on random and give me yours in the comments.

Two Cat Tales

Trans Am Kitties
Reading this post at the Hemmings Blog about 4 kittens hiding away in a 1984 Trans Am (above) they were bringing to a photo shoot reminded me of the two times I had something similar happen.
The first was back in about 1995 and, ironically, was hiding in a Camaro Z-28 much like that T/A. A coworker in advertantly brought it to work under the hood, traveling a few miles down I-696 to our company in Royal Oak. They managed to coax the kitty out of the Z ad brought it inside. Unfortunately, it got away from them and headed straight for the back of the building where the owner stored his mid 80’s 911 Targa.
Yep, the kitty crawled up inside the Porsche, well up inside, on top of the transmission as best as they could tell.
The owner arrived later that morning and decided he could flush it out. So, he opened the back door and fired up the Porsche. Several revs toward red-line should have done it, but after he shut it down there was the sad cry of a very scared kitty, still tucked up inside that 911.
At lunch a couple guys went to the grocery and brought some cat food back. That did it. The cat came out and one of the guys took it home for his girlfriend.
Cally
Story number two involves Cally, shown above. Cally belonged to friends of ours in Missouri who once lived here in Columbus but now live only about 45 miles from Maria’s family in mid-Missouri. We visited them while in MO and they had just gotten 3 kittens as mousers for their 7 acre property. We had a good visit and headed back to her parents.
That night, outside their apartment, were two cats that looked eerily like two of theirs, Cally and Shadow. So, we called, and sure enough, their cats hadn’t been seen since we left. We went out in a snow storm and tried to find them, but we could not.
The next day we were supposed to leave for home, but the snow delayed our return by a day. On the 600 mile trip home, we stopped for gas and fast food as well as at Cracker Barrel for dinner and later, I ran the van through a car wash.
The next morning I went to the garage to go to the post office to get the mail. When I opened the door to the garage, there on the steps was Cally, She had ridden in the van 45 miles back to Maria’s parents apartment, camped out in the van for a day through the snow storm and then rode the 600 miles across MO, IL, IN and OH home, enduring a car wash along the way.
I closed the door and took the other car. Later, I opened the hood and found Cally sitting on top of the engine cover. I grabber her, she clawed me and bit me, at one point hanging by her jaw from my hand. (I later had to get antibiotics and a tetanus shot.) Cally scurried across the garage and crawled up inside my 1960 Thunderbird.
She lived in the garage, under the T’bird for the month of January after which she came inside to stay. She’s still, about 4 years later, pretty skittish and won’t stay in the same room with me.
600 miles in the engine compartment of an Odyssey will do that to ya.

Five for Friday

Poison - Flesh and Blood.jpgAn “Occasional Series” here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.

  1. Poison – Strange Days of Uncle Jack from Flesh and Blood
This is the odd, airy 1:40 first track on the CD. Mumbling in the background, voice mail beeps. Weird. Makes you wonder what’s up with your MP3 player.
  2. REM – Country Feedback from Out of Time
Slow, vaguely angry song that builds in intensity. Nice.
  3. Harry Connick, Jr – On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe from 25
Great song. Starts simple with vocals and string bass only, adding piano and alto sax at the bridge. Neat stuff.
  4. Jimmy Durante – Make Someone Happy from the Sleepless in Seattle Soundtrack
OK, stop snickering, yes, it’s a chick flick soundtrack, but there’s some great music here. This track is awesome.
  5. Perta – I Can Be Friends With You from Never Say Die/Washes Whiter Than
Wow, this was a diverse list, wasn’t it? Petra from their early southern rock-ish days. Arguably the best Petra, certainly better than their 80’s hair band days.

Your turn, fire up your MP3 player, put it on random and give me yours in the comments.

Egg Trick

My Dad sent me this and I thought it was awesome. I love late night TV and watched Carson back in the day and I watched Letterman back to his days at 12:30 on NBC. Now I’ve been watching Leno at 10, Conan at 11:30 and then switching to Ferguson if I’m still up at 12:30.
My favs now are Ferguson and Conan, but Johnny was a legend and he Dom DeLuise are hilarious n this bit.

Five for Friday – Get ‘er Done Edition

Metallica - Metallica.jpgAn “Ocassional Series” here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.
Today, I’m up against a deadline at work. When I need to put my head down and get the work done, I put the headphones on and fire up my ‘Metal’ playlist (which is more ‘Hard Rock’ than just ‘Metal’). Nothing gets the creative juices flowing and ramps up my productivity better. I’m on my lunch now, so I can get a FfF in.
Mom and Dad might want to look away. 😀

  1. Metallica – Wherever I May Roam from Metallica
This is exactly what I’m talking about. Driving beat, aggressive. Just feels like hard work getting done. I’m not a Metallica fan-boy, but I love this album.
  2. Metallica – My Friend Misery from Metallica
With a limited play list, it’s not surprising that Metallica would come up twice. A little slower, but still a driving beat.
  3. Nelson – Bits and Pieces from After the Rain
Well, this is actually kinda embarrassing. One, because not many folks would consider Nelson anything close to metal and two not many folks would admit to owning a Nelson album. I actually like it and the heavy guitars and driving beat fit with the theme here, even though most Metallica fans would cringe at Metallica and Nelson mentioned in the same context.
  4. Nelson – Will You love Me from After the Rain
Figures, another Nelson tune. I was tempted to hit next and pretend it didn’t happen, but that’s not how FfF works. Not nearly as good and not as effective here. Frankly, neither Nelson tune is as effective as Metallica.
  5. Poison – Let it Play from Flesh & Blood
Nelson might be stretched in to metal, but Poison I don’t think so. A good, driving rock song, one of the best on the album.

Your turn, fire up your MP3 player, put your Get ‘er Done Music on random and give me your list in the comments. Me, I gotta get back to work.

Message Junkie

Byrd at Thinklings writes:

Sometimes I feel like I’m the only compulsive message checker on earth. I check my email probably dozens of times each day. I’m always scanning my cell phone to see if anyone left me a voice mail or a text message. I usually can’t wait to see if anything interesting came in the mail. I’m a message junkie.

My response was “Hey, look! I’m not so whacked after all!”
I have 3 different salguod.net email accounts plus Gmail and work. Oh, and I set it up so that no matter what email address you use at salguod.net, I get it. Go ahead, try it. I subscribe to too many email lists. Then there’s Twitter and Facebook. I just got text messaging on my phone too.
My emails sort into folders based on where they came from in Outlook. That message you sent to the nonsense address will end up in the ‘Catchall’ folder.
My good friend BEG was at my house and wondered what that occasional chiming sound was. It was my laptop, stored under the TV, fired up with Outlook running letting me know that there’s a new message.
He went home and fired off a succession of 4-5 emails message with one word: “BEEP”, knowing that my computer would chime each time they arrived. (I’ve since turned off the sound.)
I’m a message junkie, but it’s good to know I’m not alone.

Five For Friday

An “Ocassional Series” here at Salguod.net. Inspired by Daniel at Alien Soil, I fire up Media Player on random and post the first 5 songs here.

  1. Adiemus – Adiemus from Songs of Sanctuary
Even on random, this song is always the first song played when I click ‘All Music’ in Media Player here at work (at home it’s different). I usually skip it, but thought I’d let it play today. I first heard this on WCBE and loved it. Airy vocals and full orchestration, it has an Enya feel about it but also some African vibes, although the composer is British. According to Wikipedia, there is no language, it’s just sounds and random syllables. Instead of an album art, enjoy the surreal music video above.
  2. Casting Crowns – Voice of Truth from Casting Crowns
I love Casting Crowns, even though they’ve been played and over played. Their lyrics have a Kieth Green quality to them in that they speak to the church, often times in rebuke.
  3. The Fairfield Four – Lonesome Valley from the O Brother Where Art Thou Soundtrack
Four guys doing a free flowing negro spiritual. If you like A Capella or Negro spirituals, you may enjoy this. If not, it’s hard to listen to. I like this it, but other folks usually say “What the heck is that?!?”.
  4. File – One Foot in the Bayou from WCBE Mixx on the Fly, Volume 6
I’m not sure about the artist, but it seems right based on a web search. Great live blues tune recorded here in Columbus at WCBE.
  5. Bob Dylan – Rainy Day Women #12 And #35 from the Forest Gump soundtrack, disc 1
Two from soundtracks, interesting since I think I only own three soundtracks. I never knew this was the song’s title. You may think of it as “Everybody Must Get Stoned”. The two disc Gump soundtrack is full of great old 60s adn 70s songs.

Your turn, fire up your MP3 player, put it on random and give me yours in the comments.

Five for Friday

REM Out Of TimeI’ve not been very consistent on my Five for Friday’s, so I’m going to call this an “Ocassional Series” here at Salguod.net. Friday is almost done, so here we go.

  1. REM – Low from Out of Time
Don’t remember if this was popular release from this album, but I like it. Slow and a bit mellow, as fitting the title.
  2. Phish – Grind from Undermind
What do you know, a short (under a minute) little barbershop-esque song. I was disappointed in this disc. I heard Undermind and a couple other songs so I asked for it for Christmas. The rest of the disc is meh, but this is a fun A Capella number.
  3. Harry Connick Jr. – Music, Maestro, Please! from 25
This is a jazzy piano solo. Big band-ish without the big band. Fun.
  4. Bill Miller – River of Time from WCBE Mixx on the Fly Volume 5
Nice singer songwriter tune with acoustic guitar and harmonica. From Bill Miller’s album Raven in the Snow
  5. First Call – Legacy from God is Good
From the frequency that First Call is coming up here, you’d think my library was filled with them. I’ve never been impressed with Media Player’s random function. Doesn’t seem all that random at times. As far as this song, pretty standard mellow Christan Music stuff. There are a couple of good songs on this CD.

Your turn, fire up your MP3 player, put it on random and give me yours in the comments.

Five for Friday – Saturday After Vacation Edition

WCBE LogoWe just got back from a camping vacation with friends in the beautiful Seneca Rocks area of West Virginia. We got home Thursday night and spent yesterday cleaning up and drying out our rain soaked gear. Our friends have gone home, so now I can do my belated FfF.
So, Media Player on random, here we go.

  1. David Mead – She, Louisa from WCBE’s Lucky Seven, Mixx on the Fly, Volume 7
WCBE is one of the local NPR stations and they’ve put out a series of CDs from live performances from artists coming to the area to play. This is from his the luxury of time album. Nice singer and his guitar track.
  2. Sisai – Llorando Se Fue (Lambada) from the CD Florecer
This is a CD we bought at a street fair when we lived in Detroit. A trio were playing Andes music and had this for sale. I don’t think this is their CD, although the music is very similar. Great background music for having dinner guests.
  3. Petra – Chameleon from Never Say Die / Washes Whiter Than
This is old school Petra with two of their original albums on one CD. I guess this was pretty radical stuff for Christian music in its day.
  4. Norah Jones – The Long Day Is Over from Come Away With Me
    Slow, bluesy song.
  5. The Cranberries – Disappointment from No Need to Argue
This song makes good use of Dolores O’Riordan’s voice, flipping as she does from full voice to falsetto chest voice to head voice (My sister tells me I had the terms wrong. A woman doesn’t have a falsetto voice, rather a “head voice”).

Hmm, 5 relatively obscure songs.

On This Day
