Sorry ’bout the silence, I’ve been busy with another project. I’m setting up a blog for my wife’s family to be able to share news, stories and pictures. It’s complicated by the need for privacy and ease of use for those unfamiliar with blogs (or even the internet), two things that are at odds with one another.
Anyway, that’s been taking up my online time of late. It’s nearly done and should go live in the next couple of days. That should mean that I need to spend less time on it, but that depends on how many problems surface as folks start using it. 🙂
I’m pretty proud of how it came together and how I worked around the privacy vs. easy issues, but since it’s private, I can’t show it to you. 😛
Hopefully I’ll get back to regular blogging soon.

This is a Test.
Testing the MT 3.32 upgrade I just did. Gonna add a picture in too, just for giggles to see if that worked.
That’s Cookey again.
Oh, let’s see if the acronym plugin is working: ICOC
And Scripturizer: Acts 2:38
This is a Test of Future Posting
The time now is 12:00 PM, 9/15/2006. I’m going to set this to publish at 12:30. If it makes it to the site, that means I set my cron job up right.
Trying again:

Trying again, again:

If this works, I can write a bunch of stuff and set it to publish while I’m gone. Auto-blogging! (Not to be confused wiht Autoblog)
Milestones
I just noticed that I passed a couple of blogging milestones this week.
My last QT entry was my 500th post here at salguod.net and Kieth’s confession on my New Banner post was comment #1,500.
Pretty cool, eh?
That also means that my comments per post ratio is 3:1, which is up from about 2:1 in earlier days. I have the Unity Proposal and Kip McKean to thank for that. Anything I post about either of those generates plenty of discussion. Stories about skipping 11 year old boys? Nothing. UP or Kip’s apology? Can read ’em fast enough.
New Banner
Just because.
That’s a one off Ferrari P 4/5 inspired by the 60’s racer, the P 3/4, and based on a $1 million Ferrari Enzo. That’s right, someone bought a $1 million car and then handed it over to a design house (Pininfarina) to cut up and customize. All told, it cost him something like $4 million.
Stupid money, but a cool car and makes a cool banner image.
Good Guys 2006
I’ve been busy with blog stuff, just not posting. I’ve got a few blog related projects in the works that I’ve been working on.
One is related to my weekend activities. This past weekend was the Good Guys Nationals at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. Acres full of over 6,000 pre-1972 American (mostly) hot rods. Unlike last year, I spent this year’s Good Guys mostly on my own, although I did meet a friend for a couple hours. I was there for about 5 1/2 hours. I tried to leave a couple of times, but there was another area to explore … There were hot rods of every type – muscle cars, resto-rods, rat rods, lead sleds, 50’s style customs – you name it it was there. It was pure gear head heaven.
I said that a blog project was related to that and there is. I wanted to put my pictures up on the site, but I wasn’t happy with the gallery generated from Photoshop Elements 3.0. I looked at the 3 differnet gallery software packages available through my host, but was pretty dissapointed. Most stand alone gallery software simply produces a pretty lame looking grid layout. I did some searching and finally found the Photo Gallery plug-in for Movable Type 3.2, based these Templates from Stopdesign. A nice clean look and powered by MT.
So I spent much of the rest of the weekend setting up the new Salguod Gallery. I moved my 2005 Good Guys Gallery over to the new interface and I’m in the process of posting my 2006 pictures as well. There were a couple over 100 for 2005, I’m closer to 150 for 2006, so it might take a bit. All done, go take a look!
There are still a couple of bugs to work out, like why the first two posts in the 2006 gallery appear twice in the thumbnails, but mostly I’m very pleased. The other cool thing is that you can leave comments on the individual photos. So correct me if I’ve mis-identified any cars. I did try to be better about taking notes as I shot photos, but I missed a few and some had no tags.
I’ll might put other galleries up as well, like my Auto Show pictures from Detroit each January and T’bird stuff, we’ll see. I’ll need to put a link in the sidebar too, but I’m planning on re-doing all that soon anyway. For now, just go enjoy the Good Guys stuff.
Time For A Change of Scenery
I’ve got stuff to post about, but time is short and I’m feeling less than motivated, so it’s time to clean house around here a bit. The look is a little old, but also a bit cluttered. I like getting a lot of info on the screen, but it’s pretty cluttered now.
I made an attempt to redo the blogroll a couple of weeks ago, but I’m not happy with it. I want to highlight the sites I visit almost daily, but leave room for others as well. As it is, the ‘daily’ sites are listed twice, which I don’t like. I’m thinking of moving the blogroll to an upper, dropdown menu just under the old ‘Bird. Then I could go to a cleaner, two column look.
So, what would you my readers like me to leave alone and what should I change?
I have a hunch the type is a bit small for some, true?
What on the side menu do you use a lot? Categories? Recent Comments? Recent posts? Monthly archives?
What if the main page only had an excerpt of the article and you had to click through to read the whole thing?
I may try a whole new look based on one of the styles from the Movable Type Style Contest. Anything there (click the ‘style browser link) look good to you?
Any other ideas? (I’m sure you’ve been sitting around thinking about ways I can make my blog look better, right?)
Blogroll Update
A quick note, Patrick Mead of Tent Pegs is branching out. He’s turning Tent Pegs into a blog about family and parenting issues and posting other stuff about his work at the Rochester Church of Christ at his new blog, creatively titled Patrick Mead. I’ve added it to the blogroll.
Every parent concerned with preparing their kids to follow and find God on their own (that would be every parent, right?) should bookmark Tent Pegs and go read it at least weekly. It’s that good.
Housecleaning
A couple more housecleaning things. I know how you readers love posts about the inner workings of my blog!
First, I updated the link to Cerulean Sanctum. Dan’s ditched Blogger for WordPress and got a new address in the process. Update your links, if you’ve got ’em.
Second, I’d like a little help form any Javascript gurus who are reading. I understand that my EasyComments script that provides the comment formatting and live preview on the entry page doesn’t work in FireFox. If you use FireFox, hold your breath, say a prayer, double check your virus software (I know how you FF guys are. 🙂 ) and launch IE to see what you’ve been missing. Cool, eh? Anyway, I’d like to know why it breaks in FireFox. If you understand Javascript, take a look at the code and let me know what you think. I don’t know beans about this and only cobbled this together by wild guess and trial and error. I suspect it’s a real mess.
That’s all for now, thanks.
[EDIT:I guess it would be good to give you the actual address for Dan’s new site. The old is http://www.dedelen.com/cerulean.html the new is http://ceruleansanctum.com]
Bye Bye Dilbert
I’ve pulled Scott Adam’s Dilbert Blog from the blogroll. I’ve been close to doing it for several weeks since he started running ads for a dating service that touted sex as a selling point, but this week I noticed my pop up blocker going nuts whenever I visited. That was the proverbial staw, and he’s gone.
Scott’s funny and all, but I’m tired of trying not to look at the right side of the screen and I don’t need the hassle of pop up ads. And I’m certainly not going to promote or endorse either.
