Good Guys 2006

I’ve been busy with blog stuff, just not posting. I’ve got a few blog related projects in the works that I’ve been working on.
One is related to my weekend activities. This past weekend was the Good Guys Nationals at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. Acres full of over 6,000 pre-1972 American (mostly) hot rods. Unlike last year, I spent this year’s Good Guys mostly on my own, although I did meet a friend for a couple hours. I was there for about 5 1/2 hours. I tried to leave a couple of times, but there was another area to explore … There were hot rods of every type – muscle cars, resto-rods, rat rods, lead sleds, 50’s style customs – you name it it was there. It was pure gear head heaven.
I said that a blog project was related to that and there is. I wanted to put my pictures up on the site, but I wasn’t happy with the gallery generated from Photoshop Elements 3.0. I looked at the 3 differnet gallery software packages available through my host, but was pretty dissapointed. Most stand alone gallery software simply produces a pretty lame looking grid layout. I did some searching and finally found the Photo Gallery plug-in for Movable Type 3.2, based these Templates from Stopdesign. A nice clean look and powered by MT.
So I spent much of the rest of the weekend setting up the new Salguod Gallery. I moved my 2005 Good Guys Gallery over to the new interface and I’m in the process of posting my 2006 pictures as well. There were a couple over 100 for 2005, I’m closer to 150 for 2006, so it might take a bit. All done, go take a look!
There are still a couple of bugs to work out, like why the first two posts in the 2006 gallery appear twice in the thumbnails, but mostly I’m very pleased. The other cool thing is that you can leave comments on the individual photos. So correct me if I’ve mis-identified any cars. I did try to be better about taking notes as I shot photos, but I missed a few and some had no tags.
I’ll might put other galleries up as well, like my Auto Show pictures from Detroit each January and T’bird stuff, we’ll see. I’ll need to put a link in the sidebar too, but I’m planning on re-doing all that soon anyway. For now, just go enjoy the Good Guys stuff.

[QT’s with Jessica] – John 5

My Summer time Bible Readings with 11 year old Jessica.
John5:1-15
Do you have any questions or thoughts?
J – Why wasn’t he allowed to carry his mat?
Remember the 10 commandments?
J – Yes, but I don’t remember exactly what they say.
One of them is to honor the Sabath. Do you know what the Sabath is?
J-No.
God made the Earth in 6 days and rested on the 7th. God said to honor the Sabath and to rest like he did. They were not to work on the Sabath.
J – So carrying their mat was work?
Well, the pharasees & teacher at Jesus’ time had made a lot of rule of what was work and wasn’t. They considered carrying his mat work. I think God just wanted people to set aside a day to slow down and think about Him, but they made it about rules instead. [Note to self: Slow down on Sundays!]
Jesus was God and he said to carry his mat, so that rule must not have mattered to God, right?
J – Yes.
John 5:16-30
There’s a lot of statemants in there by Jesus. Do you have any questions about them?
J – Why did they oppose him for doing the right thing even if it was against their law?
They were more concerned about thier law than doing good things for people. They were the ones who made the laws so if the laws were wrong that meant that they were wrong. They didn’t want to be wrong so they decided Jesus was wrong.
J – I still don’t understand
Even though God had said not to work on the Sabbath, they had made lots of rules, making it hard for people to do even good things on the Sabath. Their rules were kind of a good idea, to help people obey the command to keep the Sabath holy, but they went too far and now the rules were more important than the commands of God.
Jesus was saying that they were wrong and they didn’t want to be wrong. They were the leaders, so they decided Jesus was wrong. They were prideful.
John 5:31- 47
He says some strong words here. What do you think about what he said?
j – Who was he talking to
The leaders, the pharasees.
So he was telling the leasders that they don’t know God. You think that made them more mad?
J – Yes.
What does he say was the witness that he was from God?
J – I don’t know.
First he said John was a witness (John 5:33). Then what was it?
J – It says ‘It gives witness that the Father has sent me.”
What does?
J – The work the father gave him to finish?
Yes. So they can tell he’s from from God by what he’s doing. Just like people can tell if we’re Christians by our lives as well. How we treat people and what work we’re doing.

[QT’s with Jessica] – John 4:27-54

(Oops! I forgot to post these notes from last week!)
My Summer time Bible Readings with 11 year old Jessica.
John 4:27-38
Any questions?
J – What are benefits (John 4:38)
That means rewards or the good things. Like if you work to clean your room and someone else gets to play in it. They get the benefefit of the clean room.
Do you understand what he means when he talks about his food?
J – Sort of, kinda, – not really.
Well, what does food do for you?
J – It makes you not hungry?
Why are you hungry?
J – You haven’t eaten for a while? I’m just guessing.
You need food because you need energy. So what is Jesus saying about what gives him energy (John 4:32-34)?
J – It’s funny when they say “Did someone bring him food?”
But what is Jesus saying about what gives him energy?
J – He says his food is to do God’s work. He uses energy to do God’s work?
Do we use energy when we get food or get it?
J – Get it.
So he’s saying that doing God’s work gives him energy. So the disciples didn’t understand why he was talking to her, but Jesus was doing Gods work by teaching her.
John 4:39-42
So what do you think was Jesus’ and God’s work in that place?
J – It was making more Samaritans to believe in him because they saw him for themselves.
John 4:43-54
Any questions or anything that you think was cool?
J – It was cool that Jesus was just standing there and said “your son will live” and he did. He didn’t even have to go there.
I think that’s cool too. Notice that the man believed, but he still checked the time and then he really believed. You know why?
J – No.
Because even though he believed he still had some doubts. It cool to me because I can be like that sometimes and Jesus wasn’t mad at him for not having a lot of faith at first, he still healed his son. So that means Jesus won’t be mad at me if I don’t have a lot of faith at first.

Time For A Change of Scenery

I’ve got stuff to post about, but time is short and I’m feeling less than motivated, so it’s time to clean house around here a bit. The look is a little old, but also a bit cluttered. I like getting a lot of info on the screen, but it’s pretty cluttered now.
I made an attempt to redo the blogroll a couple of weeks ago, but I’m not happy with it. I want to highlight the sites I visit almost daily, but leave room for others as well. As it is, the ‘daily’ sites are listed twice, which I don’t like. I’m thinking of moving the blogroll to an upper, dropdown menu just under the old ‘Bird. Then I could go to a cleaner, two column look.
So, what would you my readers like me to leave alone and what should I change?
I have a hunch the type is a bit small for some, true?
What on the side menu do you use a lot? Categories? Recent Comments? Recent posts? Monthly archives?
What if the main page only had an excerpt of the article and you had to click through to read the whole thing?
I may try a whole new look based on one of the styles from the Movable Type Style Contest. Anything there (click the ‘style browser link) look good to you?
Any other ideas? (I’m sure you’ve been sitting around thinking about ways I can make my blog look better, right?)

Harlequin Golf

Autoblog asks has the Harlequin Golf returned? What’s a Harlequin Golf? That’s one there at the right. Not some redneck assembly of junkyard parts, these were actually made this way. Here’s the deal:

.. these cars … feature body panels painted in Pistachio Green, Ginster Yellow, Tornado Red, and Chagall Blue. Building four single-color cars and then exchanging their body panels was how these Harlequins were produced, and Volkswagen did this for approximately 275 cars that were sold in the U.S. as 1996 models. A Harlequin model’s rocker panels, rear quarter panels and roof reveal its original color.

I love oddball rare cars like this. There’s a certain appeal to a rare, low production car. I had never heard of the Harlequin Golf, but I think it’s pretty cool.
What got Autoblog wondering was the new VW comercial announcing the return of the VW Rabbit in the US. The Rabbit was the original US name for what the world knew as the ‘Golf’. It became the Golf here as well in generation 2 and now with the introduction of generation 5, it’s back to the Rabbit. In the commercial, a white Rabbit and a black Rabbit go into a tunnel, evidently do what Rabbits do, and come out with several grey Rabbits trailing behind, including a multicolored white/grey/black one.
Check out the Harlequin Golf registry and the Harlequin Golf photo page (with the Harlequin Beetle from Mexico and the Harlequin Polo that started it all in Europe.) too.
